Task Force Mission

What is the purpose of the Sharon Connect Task Force?

Our group of volunteers came together in Nov. 2019 to help the Sharon Board of Selectmen decide whether to propose a town-wide solution to address the lack of universal broadband connectivity and unreliable cell service. The Task Force first focused on wired broadband access at home. It gathered all the relevant information on both technology and financing options to advise the Selectmen on proposals to move forward. It eventually recommended that the town accept a proposal from Comcast to wire the parts of town Comcast did not currently serve in exchange for a payment of $1.6 million. An overwhelming majority of residents attending a Town Meeting in Nov. 2022 voted to approve that proposal. In addition to helping oversee Comcast construction, which will continue until Fall 2023, the Task Force is also exploring how to help residents get the most out of their high-speed connections. The Task Force may also research possible upgrades to technology at Town Hall and will then consider options for improving cellular service.

How long will this take?

It's difficult to say. This is a multi-step process. It took the Task Force three years to research and recommend a plan for access to wired high-speed internet for all Sharon homes and businesses.
